Mythbusters and Cats
So, I watch a lot of Mythbusters. I love the show. Recently, however, they did something that upset me greatly. So I sent them the following letter:
Hello
First of all, I love your show. I watch it faithfully.
I do have a complaint, however. And I do hope this doesn’t land me in a world of Internet troubles; I loathe Internet fights, etc. Recently, I watched an episode surrounding a gun myth. I wish I could remember which one it was. Truthfully, I’ve watched so many lately, I am not absolutely sure which one it was. I think it was the episode about prisoners making homemade guns. But I might be mistaken. At one point during the episode Jamie and Adam are talking about guns and Jamie makes a comment about shooting cats in his neighborhood when he was growing up. Now, I can’t stop this act from happening. I know this. I wish that I could, but I know how kids can be. (Although, I do hope to teach my own child about compassion.) But the thing that really got to me is that kids (and adults) watch this show and look up to all of the Mythbusters. I worry that information like that could send the wrong message and end up in the wrong hands.
I’m a soon-to-be mother of a baby boy. Call it hormones, call me a crazy cat lady, but I feel that the comment was inappropriate for national television. And I wish it had been edited out.
Please keep this in mind for future episodes. I’m an animal lover. Hearing about any ill will toward our furry friends really sticks with me.
Otherwise, keep up the awesome work. I truly love the show.

Not sure what else I can do to let them know how much it bugged me.
Wow. I’ve never seen the show but what a completely irresponsible thing to let air. The fact that it happened and the guy thought it was perfectly okay to just flippantly mention it is one thing, the fact that they didn’t edit it out is even worse.
I think you did the right thing by writing.
Yeah, well, I stupidly posted it on the forum (for complaints, etc) and got attacked immediately. One guy said that’s what boys do and I have 18 years of dealing with it. Weird. My brothers never hurt animals. My husband never did either. Do all boys really hurt animals? It’s innate? Are you kidding me?
People make me so angry. I have decided to not go back there any longer to read the responses. It will only upset me further. I said my peace. I hope they read it. That’s all I can do.
Wow, that’s awful. Did you send a formal complaint to the show/network too? I would if I were you! I’d even sign your letter, too. “that’s what boys do” – what a JERK. Thanks to legislation, boys who do that can now do jail time for it in quite a few states.
State Animal Cruelty Laws
Forty-three states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands have laws making certain types of animal cruelty a felony offense.
“that’s what boys do”???? You’re freaking kidding me. Wow. I remember my little brother rescuing turtles and toads, being nothing but loving to our family pets and pretty much any animal he came in contact with. My dad was notorious for bringing home strays. And Mike is probably more of a crazy cat (and dog and any other animal) lady than I am.
Oh, believe me, this “comeback” made me very upset. It stuck with me for hours. Brought tears to my eyes. I was on the phone with my mother in minutes asking her if either of my brothers ever harmed an animal. She was shocked I had to ask. Besides squishing a few bugs here and there, they were angels. I should have asked the guy whether or not that was fact or myth.
It’s bullshit. I haven’t been back there since. I most certainly got nailed for my comment. But I will never know. I don’t want to hear about how those on there once hurt animals. I can’t deal to hear that shit.
Also, Yzz, I did try and write the network but they only real way of getting in touch with them was via their messageboard. I did, however, send a letter using a form found on the Discovery site. Haven’t heard a peep. I’m sure they just think I’m some overprotective bitch. In fact, one of the guys on there called me a politically correct asshole. So… yeah.
You know, you might consider posting about this on my friend Ted’s TV forum. There are a few people there who work in the industry and may be able to get you better contact info.
I worry about attacks. I hate Internet fights. I hate them more than I can even tell you. And forums are some of the biggest venues for such things. :[
Well, for what it’s worth Mike and I know most of the people on the VHive forums in real life and they’re a good bunch. The risk of an attack there is low.
