Apparently 20 million chickens have been held from being sold because their feed had been mixed with the tainted pet food. No word on which states are affected and if melamine-contaminated fed animals are dangerous for human consumption.

The ASPCA has posted an update here:

http://www.aspca.org/site/PageServer?pagename=media_tristatenewsalert051107#2

“As Menu Foods has greatly expanded its list of recalled foods due to evidence of cross-contamination that may have affected protein supplements, the ASPCA recommends that pets be fed products containing only U.S.-sourced protein supplements until the crisis is resolved…..”

I don’t understand why we’re using so much crap from overseas anyway? Why not just try and keep it local? And why are cats and dogs being fed wheat gluten and grain anyway? Isn’t that bad for them?

If this isn’t an argument against globalization, I don’t know what is. I am so angered by this. I’m even more angry that there are some stores that seem to still carry the crap food over the decent brands. Why not juts stop doing that? I don’t understand why people would cut so many corners on what they feed their pets. Then again, the American human diet is pretty f*cked up as well. So many people feed their children (and themselves) total crap. I guess it makes sense that the same folks not giving a rat’s ass about what they feed themselves continue to feed their animals cheap and unhealthy food.

I wish there were a way to demand that the unhealthy stuff change for the better and still make it fairly affordable.

I’m at a loss. When I think about this for too long, I become enraged to be honest.

Has anyone else here had a problem?

I used to buy Nutro exclusively for my cats. Seven, Kali, and Pearl ate wet food pouches in the morning every day. I noticed that Kali was vomiting a lot around January 3, 2007. I took her to the vet right away. The vet did a full blood panel and found nothing wrong. She concluded that it might be a bad batch of food, and advised me to toss whatever I was feeding her and start feeding her baby food after 24 hours had passed, then get her back on to dry food.

I did this, and then Pearl got sick two days later. I took her in ASAP and the vet gave me the same advice. We didn’t do bloodwork, since whatever was upsetting her was likely the same culprit with Kali.

I had to feed them both by hand (baby food) for two weeks, then they got back on dry food. Now they eat Felidae dry + wet. They hate the Felidae dry. Won’t eat it at all unless I sprinkle some of Seven’s Nutro Senior dry food on top. Ultimately I want to get them all off Nutro, and switch to * something * else but I don’t know what to trust!!!

So I filed a claim with Nutro, and I recently got a packet in the mail with a list of lawyers to contact if I want to get in on a class-action lawsuit, and a form to fill out and send back to the company if I want to try to settle directly with them.

All I want out of this is payment for the food, the vet bills, and at least one checkup with blood panels to make sure the girls are ok.

I’m about to send this form back to them, and apparently by doing so I opt out of any class action shit and settle directly with the company.
